श्रावण / आदि -- हिन्दू कैलेण्डर का सबसे पवित्र मास (और ये शिव का क्यों)
श्रावण (जुलाई-अगस्त) हिन्दू कैलेण्डर का पाँचवाँ मास, सर्वमान्य रूप से वर्ष का सबसे पवित्र -- ब्रह्माण्डीय ऊर्जा साधना के लिए सर्वाधिक अनुकूल, मानव-दिव्य लोकों की सीमा पतली, और मानसून-भीगी पृथ्वी नवजीवन से स्पन्दित।
उत्तर भारत में शिव को, दक्षिण में देवी (अम्मन/मातृदेवी) को समर्पित। दोहरा समर्पण मानसून की दोहरी प्रकृति: विध्वंसक (शिव का रुद्र -- बाढ़, तूफ़ान) और पोषक (देवी का मातृ -- फ़सल सींचती, नदियाँ भरती वर्षा)।

श्रावण के प्रमुख त्योहार: नाग पंचमी (श्रावण शुक्ल 5), हरियाली तीज (पार्वती-शिव पुनर्मिलन), रक्षा बन्धन/उपाकर्म (श्रावण पूर्णिमा)।
दक्षिण भारत में आदि (मध्य जुलाई-अगस्त) देवी को। आदि पूरम आण्डाल जन्म (श्री वैष्णव की एकमात्र महिला आळ्वार)। आदि पेरुक्कु नदी-जल उत्सव। आदि नए उपक्रमों (विशेषकर विवाह) के लिए अशुभ, पर देवी पूजा, दान, साधना के लिए तीव्र शुभ।
मानसून सम्बन्ध आकस्मिक नहीं। वर्षा ऋतु भीतर रखती, यात्रा सीमित, सांसारिक गतिविधि से स्वाभाविक वापसी। बाध्य अन्तर्मुखता तीव्र साधना की उत्तम स्थिति। चातुर्मास (देवशयनी एकादशी से) औपचारिक: न विवाह, न नया व्यापार। बाह्य ऊर्जा भीतर -- जप, तप, व्रत, पूजा। श्रावण इस अन्तर्मुखता का शिखर।
