Bilva -- Why the Bel Leaf Is Offered to Shiva
tridalaṃ triguṇākāraṃ trinetraṃ ca trayāyudham| trijanmapāpasaṃhāraṃ ekabilvaṃ śivārpaṇam ||
— Bilvashtakam, verse 1
| Point | Traditional practice |
|---|---|
| Which leaf | A whole trifoliate leaf with all three leaflets intact, not torn or eaten by insects |
| How to place it | Usually with the smooth upper side touching the linga and the stalk towards the offerer, often after washing it |
| With what | With water or milk poured over the linga, chanting "Om Namah Shivaya" or the Bilvashtakam |
| When | Any day, especially Mondays, the month of Shravan, Pradosha and Mahashivaratri |
| Reuse | Bilva leaves are traditionally not considered stale; a clean leaf may be washed and offered again |
| Plucking | Traditional rules discourage plucking on certain days, such as amavasya and sankranti; leaves are gathered beforehand |

Shiva Linga -- Symbol, Form, and Misunderstanding
The most searched, most misunderstood, and most deliberately distorted symbol in Hinduism. The word 'Linga' means 'sign' or 'mark' in Sanskrit -- the same word Panini uses in grammar for 'gender marker' and the Nyaya school uses for 'evidence in logical inference.' The Shvetashvatara Upanishad says Shiva has no linga -- meaning He is beyond all characteristics, including gender. The Linga Purana says the Linga is the formless Brahman made graspable. Colonial-era mistranslation turned this into something else entirely. Here is what the texts actually say.

Mahashivaratri -- The Great Night of Shiva
One night a year, the cosmos tilts toward Shiva. Temples stay open past midnight. Millions fast, chant, and keep vigil through the darkest night of the lunar month. The Shiva Purana says this is the night Shiva performed the Ananda Tandava -- the cosmic dance -- for the first time. It is also the night Shiva drank the Halahala poison to save creation. And the night Shiva married Parvati. Three origin stories. One night. The only Hindu festival that asks you to stay awake through the darkness rather than celebrate the light.

Vanaspati -- The Sacred Trees of the Hindu Civilisational Imagination
Pipal, Banyan, Bel, Tulsi, Neem. Five names a Hindu child learns before she can read. Each one is a deity, a doctrine, and a doctor at the same time. Behind them stands the older idea of vrkshayajna -- the worship of trees as the first acts of religion -- and the network of sacred groves that quietly preserved India's biodiversity for two thousand years.

Shravan / Aadi -- The Holiest Month in the Hindu Calendar (And Why It Belongs to Shiva)
When the monsoon arrives and India turns green, the Hindu calendar enters its most intensely devotional month. In North India, it is Shravan (Sawan) -- Shiva's month, when every Monday sees millions fasting, every Shiva temple overflows, and the Kanwar Yatra sends 30 million pilgrims walking barefoot to collect Ganga water. In South India, it is Aadi -- Devi's month, when Amman temples blaze with special pujas and women perform Aadi Pooram and Aadi Perukku rituals. Same monsoon, different deities, identical intensity.

Tulasi -- The Only Plant in Hinduism That Gets Married to God
She has eight names. She gets a wedding ceremony. Vishnu refuses prasadam without her leaf. And she sits in the courtyard of 100 million Indian homes -- not as decoration but as a living deity. Tulasi is not a plant you worship. She is a goddess who chose to become a plant.
