tasminsati śvāsapraśvāsayorgativicchedaḥ prāṇāyāmaḥ ||
— Yoga Sutras 2.49
apāne juhvati prāṇaṃ prāṇe'pānaṃ tathāpare | prāṇāpānagatī ruddhvā prāṇāyāmaparāyaṇāḥ ||
— Bhagavad Gita 4.29
| Practice | How it is done (in outline) | Traditionally said to |
|---|---|---|
| Nadi shodhana / anuloma-viloma | Breathing in through one nostril and out through the other, alternating | Purify the channels and balance the body; the usual first practice |
| Ujjayi | Slow breathing with a gentle constriction in the throat, making a soft sound | Calm and focus the mind; often used with asana |
| Bhramari | Exhaling with a humming sound like a bee | Quieten the mind; used before meditation |
| Shitali / Sitkari | Inhaling through the curled tongue or through the teeth | Cool the body |
| Surya-bhedana | Inhaling through the right nostril, exhaling through the left | Warm and energise |
| Bhastrika | Forceful, rapid breathing like a bellows | Energise strongly; an advanced practice |

The Science Behind Yoga -- From Patanjali's 196 Sutras to NIMHANS Brain Scans
Yoga is the most successful cultural export in Indian history -- practised by over 300 million people worldwide. But what most people call 'yoga' is only the third limb (asana) of an eight-limbed system that Patanjali designed as a complete technology for mastering the mind. The Yoga Sutras do not mention a single pose by name. They define yoga in four words: 'yogash chitta vritti nirodhah' -- yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind. This article traces yoga from its Vedic roots through Patanjali's systematic framework to the neuroscience labs at AIIMS and NIMHANS that are now proving what the sutras described 2,000 years ago -- that sustained practice physically rewires the brain.

Hatha Yoga Pradipika
The 15th century yogi Svatmarama compiled 389 verses into the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, the single most influential manual of physical yoga ever written. Four chapters walk the practitioner from asana to pranayama to mudra to samadhi in a specific graduated sequence. Every modern yoga studio from Rishikesh to Los Angeles, even those that have forgotten the text's name, traces its practice back to what Svatmarama wrote.

Nadis and the Subtle Body
Your body has 72,000 nadis. You will not find them in a surgical dissection. They are channels of prana, the subtle life energy, running through the subtle body that underlies the physical. Three are principal -- Ida running down the left, Pingala down the right, and Sushumna running through the centre of the spine. Every pranayama, every mudra, every mantra practice is shaping the flow of these invisible highways.

Yoga Darshana -- Patanjali's Science of the Mind
Before yoga became a global fitness trend worth $80 billion, it was India's most rigorous system of psychology. Patanjali's 196 sutras are not about touching your toes -- they are about rewiring your mind. Here is the philosophy the world forgot when it turned yoga into exercise.

Kundalini -- The Serpent Power That Sleeps at Your Spine's Base
A coiled serpent sleeps at the base of your spine. When awakened through yoga, mantra, or guru's grace, she rises through seven energy centres, dissolving every limitation of body and mind, until she merges with pure consciousness at the crown of your head. This is not New Age fantasy. This is the central psycho-spiritual technology of Tantric Hinduism -- mapped in Sanskrit texts over 1,500 years ago and now studied by neuroscientists at institutions from Harvard to NIMHANS Bangalore.

Surya Bhedana Pranayama -- The Sun-Piercing Breath
Inhale only through the right nostril, hold, exhale only through the left. Repeat. That asymmetry is the entire technique of Surya Bhedana, one of the eight classical kumbhakas of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, and the text is unusually specific about it: perform it again and again, it says, more insistently than it says about most of the other seven. This article covers the technique itself and what the tradition claims it does, stated as tradition, not as settled physiology.
