Rama Ashtakam

rāmaṃ daśarathaputraṃ ca jānakīprāṇavallabham। kausalyānandanaṃ vande raghuvaṃśasamudbhavam।।1।।

मैं दशरथ के पुत्र, जानकी के प्राणवल्लभ और कौसल्या के आनंद राम को प्रणाम करता हूँ। वे रघुवंश के गौरवशाली रत्न हैं। उनमें एक आदर्श पुत्र, पति और कुलदीपक के सभी गुण विद्यमान हैं।

I bow to Rama, the beloved son of Dasharatha and the cherished life-partner of Janaki (Sita). He is the one who fills the heart of Kausalya with joy and is the most illustrious scion of the Raghu dynasty. In him converge the highest ideals of sonhood, husbandhood, and noble lineage.

nīlābhraśarīraṃ ca pītakaśeyavāsasam। mahābāhuṃ mahākṣatraṃ namāmi raghunandanam।।2।।

मैं रघुनंदन राम को नमन करता हूँ जिनका शरीर नीले मेघ के समान सुंदर है, जो पीले रेशमी वस्त्र धारण करते हैं और जिनकी भुजाएँ अत्यंत शक्तिशाली हैं। वे महान क्षत्रिय और धर्म के रक्षक हैं। उनके रूप में सौंदर्य और पराक्रम का अद्भुत संगम है।

I bow to the delight of the Raghu clan — whose body shines like the deep blue rain cloud, who is adorned in golden yellow silk garments, and whose mighty arms are the refuge of the righteous. He is the supreme warrior-king, the protector of dharma in every age. His form unites beauty with invincible strength.

kodaṇḍakhaṇḍanaṃ śatruṃ jānakīśvaramīśvaram। sugrīvasakhyakartāraṃ vande rāmamanāmayam।।3।।

मैं उन राम को प्रणाम करता हूँ जो समस्त पीड़ाओं से परे हैं — जो कोदंड धनुष से शत्रुओं का नाश करते हैं और जानकी के स्वामी हैं। उन्होंने सुग्रीव के साथ मित्रता की जो जाति और स्थिति की सीमाओं से परे थी। उनका जीवन सिखाता है कि न्याय और विश्वास पर आधारित संबंध ही हर महान विजय की नींव होते हैं।

I bow to Rama who is free from all affliction — the wielder of the sacred Kodanda bow who destroys enemies of dharma, the supreme lord and beloved master of Janaki. He is the one who forged the great alliance with Sugriva, seeing beyond caste and station to recognize a true friend in need. His life demonstrates that alliances built on righteousness and mutual trust are the foundation of every great victory.

kamalāyatalocanam ca śyāmalaṃ madhurasvaram। brahmaṇyaṃ bhaktavatsalaṃ ca namāmi raghurāghavam।।4।।

मैं रघुकुल के श्रेष्ठ राम को नमन करता हूँ जिनके नेत्र विशाल कमल के समान हैं, वर्ण श्यामल और सुंदर है तथा स्वर अत्यंत मधुर है। वे सदा ब्रह्म के प्रति समर्पित और अपने भक्तों पर स्नेह बरसाने वाले हैं। उनका नाम सुनते ही हृदय प्रेम से भर जाता है।

I bow to the foremost of the Raghu clan — whose eyes are wide and beautiful as the lotus, whose complexion is a radiant dark blue-green, and whose voice carries the sweetness of celestial music. He is ever devoted to the sacred and overflows with tender affection for all his devotees. To hear his name alone is to feel embraced by that boundless love.

satyasandhaṃ mahādhīraṃ pitṛbhaktaṃ jitendriyam। vanavāsaikaniṣṭhaṃ ca namāmi rāmacandrakam।।5।।

मैं रामचंद्र को नमन करता हूँ जो सत्य के प्रति अटल, महान धैर्यशाली और पिता के परम भक्त हैं। उन्होंने इंद्रियों पर विजय प्राप्त की और वनवास को पूर्ण निष्ठा और प्रसन्नता से स्वीकार किया। उनका वनवास दंड नहीं बल्कि वचन की रक्षा का महान उदाहरण था।

I bow to Ramachandra — who is unwavering in his commitment to truth, supremely courageous in the face of adversity, and filled with deep devotion to his father. He is a master of the senses and accepted the forest exile with absolute single-minded resolve, never wavering in his duty. His entire life in the forest was not a punishment but a testament to the supreme dignity of keeping one's word.

hanumatservitaṃ nityaṃ sarvalokaahitaṃ param। sītāsametaṃ sukhadaṃ namāmi raghunāyakam।।6।।

मैं रघुनायक राम को नमन करता हूँ जिनकी सेवा में हनुमान सदा तत्पर रहते हैं और जो समस्त लोकों के कल्याण में सदा संलग्न रहते हैं। सीता के साथ विराजमान वे परमानंद के दाता हैं। उनके दरबार में प्रवेश का एकमात्र अधिकार है — प्रेम और भक्ति।

I bow to the leader of the Raghu clan — who is eternally attended by the devoted Hanuman, who works ceaselessly for the welfare of all worlds, and who grants boundless joy to all. He is seen ever in the company of Sita, representing the sacred union of dharma and compassion. In his court of the heart, devotion and love are the only qualifications for entry.

maryādāpuruṣottamaṃ dharmarakṣakamavyayam। rāvaṇāntakaraṃ vīraṃ namāmi rāmamīśvaram।।7।।

मैं ईश्वर राम को नमन करता हूँ — जो मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम हैं, जो धर्म के अविनाशी रक्षक हैं और जिन्होंने अधर्म के प्रतीक रावण का अंत किया। वे वे पुरुष हैं जो अत्यंत कठिन परिस्थितियों में भी अपनी नैतिक मर्यादा नहीं तोड़ते। रावण पर उनकी विजय यह शाश्वत सत्य सिद्ध करती है कि अंतत: सत्य और धर्म की ही जीत होती है।

I bow to Lord Rama — the supreme among all beings who upholds the highest boundaries of righteous conduct, the imperishable protector of dharma, and the heroic destroyer of Ravana who embodied adharma. He is Maryada Purushottama — the one who never breaks the sacred code of ethical conduct even under the most extreme personal suffering. His victory over Ravana is eternal proof that ultimately, truth and righteousness prevail over every kind of evil.

ityetad rāmāṣṭakamidaṃ yaḥ paṭhed bhaktisaṃyutaḥ। sarvapāpavinirmuktaḥ rāmasāyujyamāpnuyāt।।8।।

जो कोई इस रामाष्टकम् का भक्तिपूर्वक पाठ करता है, वह सभी पापों और जन्म-जन्मांतर के नकारात्मक कर्मों से मुक्त हो जाता है। ऐसी भक्तिमयी आत्मा राम के साथ सायुज्य — अर्थात् उनमें विलीन होने की परम अवस्था — को प्राप्त करती है। यह अष्टकम् केवल एक स्तुति नहीं, बल्कि एक रूपांतरण है जो पाठक को स्वयं राम का प्रतिबिंब बना देता है।

Whoever recites this Rama Ashtakam with a heart full of devotion shall be freed from all sins and negative karmas accumulated across lifetimes. Such a devoted soul attains the supreme state of union with Rama — not merely closeness to the divine, but a merging into his very essence of truth, love, and righteousness. This eightfold praise is not just a prayer but a transformation, turning the one who recites it into a reflection of Rama himself.
