Shani Ashtakam

namasye śanidevaṃ taṃ śūlapāṇiṃ kirīṭinam| khaḍgapāṇiṃ mahākāyaṃ taṃ namasye ca dussaham||1||

मैं शूल धारण करने वाले, किरीट पहनने वाले, खड्ग हाथ में लिए हुए, महाकाय शनिदेव को प्रणाम करता हूँ। जो देव दुस्सह — अर्थात् सहन करना कठिन — हैं, उन्हें भी मैं नमन करता हूँ। यह अष्टकम् कर्म के न्यायाधीश शनिदेव की स्तुति का शुभारंभ करता है।

I bow to Lord Shani, who holds the trident and wears a radiant crown, who bears the sword in his mighty hand and is of immense cosmic form. I salute this formidable deity who is difficult to withstand, the great enforcer of cosmic order. With humility and reverence, I offer my prostrations to the supreme judge of karma.

nīlāmbaro nīlavapuḥ kākadhvajo vibhāvasuḥ| śanaiścaraḥ kṛtāntaśca namastubhyaṃ mahāgraha||2||

नीले वस्त्र धारण करने वाले, नीले शरीर वाले, कौए के ध्वज वाले और तेजस्वी शनिदेव को प्रणाम है। धीरे-धीरे चलने वाले (शनैश्चर) और कर्मों का अंत करने वाले इस महाग्रह को मेरा नमस्कार है। शनिदेव ही वे शक्ति हैं जो हमारे जीवन की गति और दिशा निर्धारित करते हैं।

Clad in dark blue garments, with a complexion dark as the deep night sky, bearing the crow upon his banner — this is the radiant Lord Shani, the slow-moving one, the great bringer of endings. I offer my reverent salutations to you, O Mahāgraha, the mightiest of all planetary deities. You are both the culmination and the cosmic enforcer whose movements shape all destinies.

yasya dṛṣṭyā bhaved rogo mucyate ca yadājñayā| taṃ namasye śaniṃ devaṃ śatrunāśakaraṃ śubham||3||

जिनकी दृष्टि मात्र से रोग और कष्ट उत्पन्न होते हैं, और जिनकी आज्ञा से ही उनसे मुक्ति भी मिलती है — उन शनिदेव को मेरा नमस्कार है। वे शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले और शुभ फल देने वाले हैं। कष्ट देने वाली और कष्ट हरने वाली दोनों शक्तियाँ शनिदेव में ही निहित हैं।

By whose mere gaze affliction and disease arise in the world, yet by whose gracious command one is also fully liberated from all such suffering. I bow to that Lord Shani, who destroys enemies and ultimately bestows all auspiciousness. He who can wound can also heal — the same power that tests us is the power that frees us.

sūryaputro dīrghadebo viśālākṣo mahābalaḥ| saurāṣṭro nīlajīmūtasaṃnibhaḥ śanir avyayaḥ||4||

सूर्य के पुत्र, लम्बे शरीर वाले, विशाल नेत्रों वाले और अत्यंत बलशाली शनिदेव गहरे नीले बादलों के समान प्रतीत होते हैं। वे अव्यय हैं — अर्थात् कभी नष्ट न होने वाले और अक्षय शक्ति से युक्त। सूर्यपुत्र होते हुए भी वे अंधकार जैसे बादलों के समान हैं जो अंततः जीवन देने वाले जल को बरसाते हैं।

Son of the Sun, of tall and towering form, with wide all-seeing eyes and immense strength — Lord Shani resembles the dark, rain-heavy clouds that fill the monsoon sky. He is eternal and inexhaustible, the undying cosmic force that sustains the law of karma across all ages. Though born of light, he governs the darkness that brings essential rain — destruction that nourishes.

namaste koṇasaṃsthāya piṅgalāya namo namaḥ| namaste babhrurupāya kṛṣṇāya ca namo namaḥ||5||

कोण (दिशाओं के कोनों) में विराजमान, पिंगल (तांबई) रंग वाले शनिदेव को बार-बार नमस्कार। बभ्रु (गहरे भूरे) रूप वाले और कृष्ण (काले) रंग वाले शनिदेव को भी बारंबार प्रणाम। शनिदेव के अनेक रूप हैं और उनके हर रूप में कर्म की शक्ति विद्यमान है।

Salutations to you, the presiding deity of the corners and angles of cosmic geometry, the tawny-hued, the dark-brown formed — salutation upon salutation. To you of dark complexion, the ever-mysterious, I offer repeated, earnest bows of reverence. Shani manifests in multiple shades and aspects, each name revealing a different facet of his boundless nature.

namaste raudradehāya namaste cāntakāya ca| namaste yamasaṃjñāya namaste saumyarūpiṇe||6||

भयंकर शरीर वाले शनिदेव को नमस्कार, और अंत करने वाले रूप को भी नमस्कार। यम के समान न्याय करने वाले रूप को नमस्कार, और साथ ही सौम्य, कोमल रूप को भी नमस्कार। शनिदेव एक साथ भयावह भी हैं और करुणामय भी — यही उनकी महानता है।

Salutation to you of the fierce and terrible form, salutation also to you as the great ender of all things. Salutation to you who are known by the name of Yama, the lord of death and justice, and yet — salutation equally to you who also possesses a gentle and benevolent form. Shani is the complete truth: terrifying and compassionate, ending and beginning, all at once.

namaste ghorakarmaṇe namaste dīrghāyuṣe| namaste sarvabhakṣāya namaste viśvatomukhe||7||

भयंकर कर्म करने वाले शनिदेव को नमस्कार और दीर्घायु, अनंतकाल तक जीवित रहने वाले को भी नमस्कार। सब कुछ ग्रहण करने वाले और चारों दिशाओं में मुख किए हुए — अर्थात् सर्वव्यापी — शनिदेव को नमस्कार। शनि न कुछ छोड़ते हैं, न किसी का हिसाब भूलते हैं।

Salutation to you whose actions in karma are fearsome and far-reaching, and salutation to you the long-lived, eternal one who transcends time itself. Salutation to you the all-consuming, who takes back all that was given, and salutation to you whose face looks out in every direction simultaneously. Shani is everywhere, sees everything, consumes all karma, and endures beyond all ages.

prasanno bhava me deva daśarathena praṇītayā| stutayā tuṣṭo bhava vibho śanaiścara namo'stu te||8||

हे शनिदेव, दशरथ द्वारा प्रणीत इस स्तुति से आप मुझ पर प्रसन्न हों। हे विभो, हे शनैश्चर, इस स्तुति से तुष्ट होइए और मुझे अपनी कृपा प्रदान कीजिए। यह अष्टकम् इस प्रार्थना के साथ समाप्त होता है कि शनिदेव प्रेम और श्रद्धा से की गई इस स्तुति से संतुष्ट होकर कल्याण करें।

O Lord Shani, be pleased with me through this hymn composed and offered by Dasharatha — be satisfied and gracious, O all-pervading mighty one. O Śanaiścara, the slow and deliberate mover of destinies, I offer my final salutation to you. May this sincere devotion reach your heart and may your grace flow like rain upon this humble soul who seeks not escape from karma, but the strength to fulfill it.
