Manikarnika Ashtakam
The Manikarnika Ashtakam is a genuine nine-verse Sanskrit hymn attributed to Adi Shankaracharya (colophon: composed by the disciple of Bhagavatpada Govinda), praising Manikarnika, the sacred cremation ghat of Kashi on the bank of the Ganga. It describes Hari and Hara conversing over the soul departing at Manikarnika, Kashi's superiority even over heaven, and death on this ghat as a direct gateway to liberation. Verified against sanskritdocuments.org (ITX source, category ashtaka/devii/shankaracharya) and independently cross-checked against other published transcriptions.
tvattīre maṇikarṇike hariharau sāyujyamuktipradau vadantau kurutaḥ parasparamubhau jantoḥ prayāṇotsave | madrūpo manujo'yamastu hariṇā proktaḥ śivastatkṣaṇā- ttanmadhyādbhṛgulāñchano garuḍagaḥ pītāmbaro nirgataḥ ||1||
On your bank, O Manikarnika, Hari and Hara -- both granters of the liberation of divine union -- converse with each other at the moment a soul departs. The instant Shiva says, 'Let this man become My own form,' from that very presence there emerges one marked with Bhrigu's sign, mounted on Garuda, clad in yellow silk -- Narayana himself.
indrādyāstridaśāḥ patanti niyataṃ bhogakṣaye ye puna- rjāyante manujāstato'pi paśavaḥ kīṭāḥ pataṅgādayaḥ | ye mātarmaṇikarṇike tava jale majjanti niṣkalmaṣāḥ sāyujye'pi kirīṭakaustubhadharā nārāyaṇāḥ syurnarāḥ ||2||
Even Indra and the other gods inevitably fall once their store of merit and enjoyment is exhausted, and are reborn as humans, and thereafter even as animals, insects, and moths. But O Mother Manikarnika, those who bathe stainlessly in your waters become, even in the state of divine union, crowned beings resembling Narayana, wearing the Kaustubha jewel.
kāśī dhanyatamā vimuktanagarī sālaṅkṛtā gaṅgayā tatreyaṃ maṇikarṇikā sukhakarī muktirhi tatkiṅkarī | svarlokastulitaḥ sahaiva vibudhaiḥ kāśyā samaṃ brahmaṇā kāśī kṣoṇitale sthitā gurutarā svargo laghutvaṃ gataḥ ||3||
Kashi, the most blessed city of liberation, is adorned by the Ganga; and within it, this Manikarnika is the bliss-giver, to whom even liberation itself is but a servant. When Brahma himself weighed heaven together with all its gods against Kashi, Kashi -- though resting on the earth -- was found the heavier and greater, while heaven was found the lighter.
gaṅgātīramanuttamaṃ hi sakalaṃ tatrāpi kāśyuttamā tasyāṃ sā maṇikarṇikottamatamā yatreśvaro muktidaḥ | devānāmapi durlabhaṃ sthalamidaṃ pāpaughanāśakṣamaṃ pūrvopārjitapuṇyapuñjagamakaṃ puṇyairjanaiḥ prāpyate ||4||
Every bank of the Ganga is indeed unsurpassed, yet among them Kashi is the best; and within Kashi, this Manikarnika is the very best, where the Lord Himself grants liberation. This place, rare even for the gods, capable of destroying the flood of sins, is reached only through merit accumulated across past lives, and is attained only by truly meritorious people.
duḥkhāmbhodhigato hi jantunivahasteṣāṃ kathaṃ niṣkṛti- rjñātvā taddhi viriñcinā viracitā vārāṇasī śarmadā | lokāḥ svargasukhāstato'pi laghavo bhogāntapātapradāḥ kāśī muktipurī sadā śivakarī dharmārthamokṣapradā ||5||
Knowing how the multitude of beings sunk in the ocean of sorrow might find deliverance, Brahma fashioned Varanasi, the bestower of happiness. Even the heavenly worlds of pleasure are, by comparison, lesser, since they lead to a fall once their enjoyment ends. Kashi is forever the city of liberation, ever auspicious, granting dharma, artha and moksha.
eko veṇudharo dharādharadharaḥ śrīvatsabhūṣādharo yo'pyekaḥ kila śaṅkaro viṣadharo gaṅgādharo mādhavaḥ | ye mātarmaṇikarṇike tava jale majjanti te mānavā rudrā vā harayo bhavanti bahavasteṣāṃ bahutvaṃ katham ||6||
There is one who bears the flute, the mountain, and the Srivatsa mark -- Madhava. And there is likewise one alone called Shankara, bearer of poison and of the Ganga. O Mother Manikarnika, those humans who bathe in your waters become, in their multitude, forms of Rudra or Hari -- yet how can their apparent multiplicity truly stand, when Hari and Hara are, in essence, one?
tvattīre maraṇaṃ tu maṅgalakaraṃ devairapi ślāghyate śakrastaṃ manujaṃ sahasranayanairdraṣṭuṃ sadā tatparaḥ | āyāntaṃ savitā sahasrakiraṇaiḥ pratyudgato'bhūtsadā puṇyo'sau vṛṣago'thavā garuḍagaḥ kiṃ mandiraṃ yāsyati ||7||
Death on your bank is truly auspicious, praised even by the gods. Indra, with his thousand eyes, is ever eager to behold that person; the Sun, with his thousand rays, always rises to greet the one who arrives in death. That blessed soul -- whether now mounted on Shiva's bull or on Vishnu's Garuda -- what other abode would he even need to seek?
madhyāhne maṇikarṇikāsnapanajaṃ puṇyaṃ na vaktuṃ kṣamaḥ svīyairabdaśataiścaturmukhadharo vedārthadīkṣāguruḥ | yogābhyāsabalena candraśikharastatpuṇyapāraṅgata- stvattīre prakaroti suptapuruṣaṃ nārāyaṇaṃ vā śivam ||8||
Even four-faced Brahma, the guru who initiates beings into the meaning of the Vedas, is unable to describe, even across his own hundreds of years, the merit born of bathing in Manikarnika at midday. Chandrashekhara Shiva himself, having by the strength of yogic practice gone beyond even that merit, causes on your bank the sleeping soul to become Narayana or Shiva.
kṛcchraiḥ koṭiśataiḥ svapāpanidhanaṃ yaccāśvamedhaiḥ phalaṃ tatsarvaṃ maṇikarṇikāsnapanaje puṇye praviṣṭaṃ bhavet | snātvā stotramidaṃ naraḥ paṭhati cetsaṃsārapāthonidhiṃ tīrtvā palvalavatprayāti sadanaṃ tejomayaṃ brahmaṇaḥ ||9||
Whatever fruit is gained from hundreds of millions of severe penances for the destruction of one's own sins, or from Ashvamedha sacrifices, all of it becomes contained within the merit born of bathing in Manikarnika. If a man, having bathed, recites this hymn, he crosses the ocean of samsara as though it were a mere puddle, and reaches the radiant abode of Brahman.
