महादेव शिव का सबसे प्रसिद्ध विशेषण है, लेकिन अय्यप्पा के गुण के रूप में यह कुछ गहरा घोषित करता है। शबरीमला का दावा कि अय्यप्पा शैव और वैष्णव परम्पराओं को एकजुट करता है इस नाम में व्यक्त है।
