तीन नगरों का संहारक, जो स्थूल, सूक्ष्म और कारण तल की बद्ध अवस्था के अनुरूप अज्ञान के तीन स्तरों को विलीन करते हैं

त्रिपुरान्तक शिव के सबसे नाटकीय पौराणिक कार्य को वहन करता है: एक ही तीर से दानव तारकाक्ष, विद्युन्माली और कमलाक्ष के तीन नगरों (त्रिपुर) का विनाश। तीन नगर तीन शरीरों (स्थूल, सूक्ष्म, कारण) का प्रतिनिधित्व करते हैं। अवधूत गीता त्रिपुर का विनाश एक साथ करती है। कर्नाटक के हम्पी में विरूपाक्ष मन्दिर (यूनेस्को विश्व धरोहर स्थल) और बल्लिगावे में त्रिपुरान्तकेश्वर मन्दिर सबसे महत्त्वपूर्ण त्रिपुरान्तक स्थलों में हैं।
