चेतना का हंस, आत्मा का वह शुद्ध श्वेत पक्षी जो शाश्वत और अस्थायी, वास्तविक और आभासी के बीच विवेक करता है

हंस (हंस) सम्पूर्ण भारतीय चिंतन परंपरा में सबसे गुंजायमान प्रतीकात्मक नामों में से एक है। इसके अर्थ सुंदर रूप से परतदार हैं: हंस पक्षी दूध और पानी को अलग करने की क्षमता के लिए प्रसिद्ध है (विवेक); हंस के अक्षर उलटे करने पर सो-हम ('वह मैं हूँ') मिलता है, वह श्वास-प्रार्थना जो व्यक्तिगत को सार्वभौमिक से एकात्म करती है; उपनिषदों में परमहंस मुक्त साधक का सर्वोच्च पदनाम है।
