श्मशान के स्वामी, जीवन और मृत्यु के बीच उस सीमान्त स्थान के अधीश्वर जहाँ सारा दिखावा गिर जाता है और केवल चेतना का सत्य शेष रहता है

श्मशानेश (श्मशान के स्वामी) शिव के श्मशान के साथ संबंध को एक विचित्र विवरण से आध्यात्मिक शिक्षा तक ऊपर उठाता है। श्मशान भारत के पवित्र भूगोल में सबसे आध्यात्मिक रूप से केन्द्रित स्थान है। शिव यहाँ अध्यक्षता करते हैं क्योंकि यह वह स्थान है जहाँ मुक्ति सबसे आसानी से उपलब्ध है। वाराणसी का मणिकर्णिका घाट, जहाँ हजारों वर्षों से निरंतर चिताएँ जलती हैं, श्मशानेश की जीवंत वेदी है।
