महात्मा

The great self, the supreme Mahātmā (one of great soul, the magnanimous, the one whose ātman is the greatest possible) , the divine in whom the individual ātman and the universal ātman are most completely unified

महान आत्मा, परम महात्मा (महान आत्मा वाले, उदार, वह जिनकी आत्मन सबसे बड़ी संभव है) , वह दिव्य जिनमें व्यक्तिगत आत्मन और सार्वभौमिक आत्मन सबसे पूर्णतः एकीकृत हैं

महात्मा (महान आत्मा) शिव को भारत के आधुनिक इतिहास में सबसे प्रिय सम्मान , 'महात्मा गांधी' का उपाधि , का उपयोग करके नामित करता है। इसके मूल धर्मशास्त्रीय अर्थ में, महात्मा (महा + आत्मन् से) का अर्थ है 'महान आत्मा'। भगवद्गीता महात्मा (8.15) का उपयोग मुक्त लोगों के लिए करती है जो पुनर्जन्म को नहीं लौटते। गांधी को महात्मा के रूप में भारत का सम्मान इस प्राचीन पहचान में समकालीन भागीदारी है।
