Shiv Tandav Stotram

jaṭāṭavīgalajjalapravāhapāvitasthale gale'valambya lambitāṃ bhujaṅgatuṅgamālikām | ḍamaḍḍamaḍḍamaḍḍamannināḍavaḍḍamarvayaṃ cakāra caṇḍatāṇḍavaṃ tanotu naḥ śivaḥ śivam ||1||

जटाओं के घने जंगल से बहती गंगा की पवित्र धारा से भूमि को पावन करते हुए, गले में विशाल सर्प की माला लटकाए, डमरू की डमड्-डमड् ध्वनि के साथ शिवजी ने प्रचण्ड तांडव नृत्य किया। वे शिव हमारा कल्याण करें।

With the holy waters of the Ganges flowing from the dense forest of His matted locks purifying the land, with a great serpent garland hanging from His neck, and with the rhythmic sound of His drum going ḍamaḍ-ḍamaḍ, Lord Shiva performed the fierce cosmic dance. May that Shiva bestow auspiciousness upon us.

jaṭākaṭāhasambhramabhramannilimpanirjharī- vilolav īcivall arīvirājamānamūrdhani | dhagaddhagaddhagajjvalallalāṭapaṭṭapāvake kiśoracandraśekhare ratiḥ pratikṣaṇaṃ mama ||2||

जटाओं के गहरे कुण्ड में घूमती हुई देव-नदी गंगा की चंचल लहरें लताओं की भाँति उनके मस्तक को सुशोभित करती हैं। उनके ललाट पर धगद्-धगद् करती अग्नि प्रज्वलित है। उन बालचन्द्रशेखर शिव के प्रति मेरी प्रीति प्रतिक्षण बढ़ती रहे।

The celestial river Ganges whirls and swirls within the deep cauldron of His matted hair, its agitated waves like creepers adorning His head. His forehead blazes with the fire that goes dhagad-dhagad. May my love grow every moment for this Lord who wears the crescent moon on His crown.

dharādharendranandnīvilāsabandhubandhura- sphuradd igantasantatipramodamānamānase | kṛpākaṭākṣadhoraṇīniruddhadurdharāpadi kvaciddigambare mano vinodametu vastuni ||3||

पर्वतराज की पुत्री पार्वती के विलास और साहचर्य से जिनका हृदय प्रसन्न होता है, जिनका आनंद दिशाओं के अंत तक स्पंदित होता है, जिनकी कृपादृष्टि की धारा भयंकर विपत्तियों को भी रोक देती है — उन दिगम्बर शिव में मेरा मन आनंद पाए।

He whose heart rejoices beautifully in the company and graceful play of Parvati, the daughter of the king of mountains, whose delight vibrates to the ends of all directions — He whose stream of compassionate glances stops the most unbearable calamities. May my mind find delight in that sky-clad Supreme Reality.

jaṭābhujaṅgapiṅgalasphurat-phaṇāmaṇiprabhā- kadambakuṅkumadravapraliptadigvadhūmukhe | madāndhasindhurasphurattvaguttarīyamedure mano vinodamadbhutaṃ bibhartu bhūtabhartari ||4||

जटाओं में लिपटे पीले सर्पों के चमकते फणों की मणियों की प्रभा सभी दिशा-वधुओं के मुख पर कुंकुम जैसी आभा बिखेरती है। मदोन्मत्त गजराज की कम्पित खाल को उत्तरीय वस्त्र के रूप में धारण करने वाले उन भूतनाथ शिव में मेरा मन अद्भुत आनंद पाए।

The radiance of the jewels on the gleaming hoods of the tawny serpents entwined in His matted hair paints the faces of the brides of all directions with saffron-colored light. He wears the quivering skin of a maddened elephant as His upper garment. May my mind find marvelous delight in that Lord of all beings.

sahasralocanaprabhṛtyaśeṣalekhaśekhara- prasūnadhūlidhōraṇīvidhūsarāṅghripīṭhabhūḥ | bhujaṅgarājamālayā nibaddhajāṭajūṭaka śriyai cirāya jāyatāṃ cakorabandhuśekharaḥ ||5||

इन्द्र आदि समस्त देवताओं के मुकुटों से गिरती पुष्प-पराग की धारा से जिनके चरण-पीठ की भूमि धूसर हो जाती है, सर्पराज की माला से जिनके जटाजूट बँधे हैं — वे चकोरबन्धु चन्द्रमा को शिखर पर धारण करने वाले शिव चिरकाल तक हमें श्री प्रदान करें।

The ground at the pedestal of His feet is made grey by the stream of flower-pollen falling from the crowns of Indra and countless other gods who bow before Him. His matted locks are tied with a garland of the king of serpents. May that Lord who wears the moon — friend of the cakora bird — on His crest, bestow prosperity upon us for a long time.

lalāṭacatvarajvaladdhanañjayasphuliṅgabhā- nipītapañcasāyakaṃ namannilimpanāyakam | sudhāmayūkhalekhayā virājamānaśekharaṃ mahākapālisampadeśirojaṭālamastu naḥ ||6||

जिनके ललाट के विस्तृत प्रांगण में प्रज्वलित अग्नि की स्फुलिंग-कान्ति ने कामदेव के पाँचों बाणों को भस्म कर दिया, जिनके सम्मुख सभी देवगण नतमस्तक हैं, जिनका शिखर अमृत-किरण चन्द्ररेखा से विराजमान है — उन महाकपाली शिव का जटाजूट हमें सम्पदा प्रदान करे।

From the broad courtyard of His forehead, the blazing fire sent forth sparks that consumed the five arrows of Kamadeva (god of love). Before Him all celestial leaders bow. His crest shines resplendently with a streak of nectar-rayed moonlight. May the matted-locked head of that great skull-wearing Lord bring us prosperity.

karālabhālapaṭṭikādhagaddhagaddhagajjvala- ddhanañjayāhutīkṛtapracaṇḍapañcasāyake | dharādharendranandanīkucāgracitrapatra ka- prakalpanaikaśilpini trilocane ratirmama ||7||

जिन्होंने अपने प्रचण्ड ललाट की धगद्-धगद् प्रज्वलित अग्नि में भयंकर कामदेव को आहुति बना दिया; जो पर्वतराजपुत्री पार्वती के वक्ष पर सुन्दर पत्रक-चित्र अंकित करने वाले अद्वितीय शिल्पी हैं — उन त्रिलोचन शिव में मेरी रति बनी रहे।

He who offered fierce Kamadeva as an oblation into the blazing dhagad-dhagad fire of His terrible forehead; He who is the sole artist who paints the beautiful decorative leaf-designs on the bosom of Parvati, daughter of the mountain king — may my love dwell in that three-eyed Lord.

navīnameghamaṇḍalī niruddhadura dharsphura- tkuhūniśīthinītamaḥprabanddhabaddhakandaraḥ | nilimpanirjharīdharastanotu kṛttisinduraḥ kalānidhānabanduraḥ śriyaṃ jagaddhurandaraḥ ||8||

नवीन मेघमालाओं से अवरुद्ध अमावस्या की गहन अंधकार जैसी शोभा से युक्त कंठ वाले, देवनदी गंगा को धारण करने वाले, गजचर्म से सुशोभित, कलानिधि चन्द्रमा से सुन्दर, जगत का भार वहन करने वाले शिव हमें श्री प्रदान करें।

His neck is dark as the continuous darkness of a new-moon midnight, obstructed by clusters of fresh dark clouds. He is the bearer of the celestial Ganges, adorned with the elephant hide, beautified by the treasure of the moon's digits. May that sustainer of the world bestow prosperity upon us.

praphullanīlapaṅkajaprapañcakālimacchaṭā- viḍambika ṇṭhakandharāruciprabandhakandaram | smaracchidaṃ puracchidaṃ bhavacchidaṃ makhacchidaṃ gajacchidāndhakacchidaṃ tamantakacchidaṃ bhaje ||9||

जिनके कंठ की श्यामलता पूर्ण प्रफुल्लित नील कमलों के समूह की कालिमा की छटा को भी मात देती है; जो कामदेव के विनाशक, त्रिपुर के विनाशक, भवबन्धन के विनाशक, दक्ष-यज्ञ के विनाशक, गजासुर के विनाशक, अन्धकासुर के विनाशक और स्वयं मृत्यु के विनाशक हैं — उन शिव को मैं भजता हूँ।

I worship Him whose neck rivals the beauty of a multitude of fully bloomed blue lotuses in its dark splendor. He is the destroyer of Kamadeva, the destroyer of Tripura, the destroyer of worldly bondage, the destroyer of Daksha's sacrifice, the destroyer of the elephant demon, the destroyer of Andhaka, and the destroyer of Death itself.

akharvasarvamaṅgalākalākadambamañjarī- rasapravāhamādhurīvijṛmbhaṇāmadhuvratam | smarāntakaṃ purāntakaṃ bhavāntakaṃ makhāntakaṃ gajāntakāndhakāntakaṃ tamantakāntakaṃ bhaje ||10||

सर्वमंगला पार्वती की अपार कला-कदम्ब-मञ्जरी के रस-प्रवाह की माधुरी के विकास में मधुमक्खी के समान रत; कामदेव, त्रिपुर, भवबन्धन, दक्ष-यज्ञ, गजासुर, अन्धकासुर और स्वयं मृत्यु को समाप्त करने वाले शिव को मैं भजता हूँ।

He is like a bee drawn to the blossoming sweetness of the flowing nectar of the vast cluster of arts and auspicious qualities of Goddess Parvati. I worship that destroyer of Kamadeva, destroyer of Tripura, destroyer of worldly bondage, destroyer of Daksha's sacrifice, destroyer of the elephant demon, destroyer of Andhaka, and the destroyer of Death.

jayatvadabhravibhramabhramadbhujaṅgamaśvasa- dvinirgamatkramasphuratkarālabhālahavyavāṭ | dhimiddhimiddhimidhvananmṛdaṅgatuṅgamaṅgala- dhvanikramapravartitapracaṇḍatāṇḍavaḥ śivaḥ ||11||

जय हो उन शिव की, जिनके चारों ओर घूमते अनेक सर्पों की श्वास से निकलती अग्नि उनके भयंकर ललाट पर क्रमशः स्फुरित होती है, और जिनका प्रचण्ड तांडव मृदंग की धिमिद्-धिमिद्-धिमिद् ध्वनि की महान मंगल लय से संचालित होता है!

Victory to Lord Shiva, whose fierce forehead fire flashes forth in succession from the hissing breaths of the abundantly whirling serpents, and whose fierce Tandava dance is set in motion by the rhythm of the great auspicious drum sounds of dhimid-dhimid-dhimid!

dṛṣadvicitratalpayorbhujaṅgamauktikasrajo- rgariṣṭharatnal oṣṭhayoḥ suhṛdvipakṣapakṣayoḥ | tṛṇāravindacakṣuṣoḥ prajāmahīmahen drayoḥ samapravṛttikaḥ kadā sadāśivaṃ bhajāmyaham ||12||

पत्थर और सुसज्जित शय्या में, सर्पमाला और मोतियों की माला में, बहुमूल्य रत्न और मिट्टी के ढेले में, मित्र और शत्रु में, तृण और कमलनयनी सुन्दरी में, साधारण प्रजा और महान इन्द्र में समान दृष्टि रखते हुए मैं कब सदाशिव की भक्ति करूँगा?

When will I worship the eternally auspicious Sadashiva with an equal vision — seeing a stone and a decorated bed as the same, serpent-garlands and pearl-necklaces as the same, the most precious jewel and a clod of earth as the same, friend and foe as the same, grass and lotus-eyed beauty as the same, common people and mighty kings as the same?

kadā nilimpanirjharīnikuñjakoṭare vasan vimuktadur matiḥ sadā śiraḥsthamañjaliṃ vahan | vimuktalolalocanō lalāmabhālalagnkaḥ śiveti mantramuccaran kadā sukhī bhavāmyaham ||13||

कब मैं देवनदी गंगा के निकुंज-कोटर में निवास करूँगा, दुर्बुद्धि से मुक्त होकर, सदा सिर पर अंजलि धारण किए, चंचल नेत्रों से मुक्त, ललाट पर तिलक लगाए, 'शिव' मंत्र का उच्चारण करते हुए — कब मैं सच्चा सुखी होऊँगा?

When will I dwell in the cave-bowers near the celestial Ganges, freed from all evil thoughts, always carrying my folded hands above my head in prayer, my eyes free from restless wandering, with the sacred mark on my forehead, chanting the mantra 'Shiva' — when will I become truly happy?

nilimpanāthanāgarīkadambamaulimallikā- nigumphanirbharakṣaranmadhūṣṇikāmanoharaḥ | tanotu no manomudaṃ vinodinīṃ mahaniśaṃ paraśriyaṃ paraṃ padaṃ tadaṅgajatviṣāṃ cayaḥ ||14||

देवलोक की नारियों के समूह के मुकुटों में गुँथी मल्लिका से बहती मधु-सुगन्ध जैसा मनोहर, उनके अंगों से उत्पन्न तेज का समूह हमें दिन-रात मानसिक आनंद, परम श्री और सर्वोच्च पद प्रदान करे।

The collection of radiance born from His divine body is enchanting, captivating like the abundant honey-fragrance dripping from the jasmine woven into the crowns of clusters of celestial women. May that radiance bestow upon us mental joy day and night, supreme glory, and the highest spiritual state.

pracaṇḍavāḍavānalaprab hāśubhapracāraṇī mahāṣṭasiddhikāminījanāvahūtajalpanā | vimuktavāmalocanāvalambika ṇṭhabhūṣaṇo- rjayatyanantavakratā bhujaṅgavakrambhaṇaḥ ||15||

प्रचण्ड वाडवाग्नि की शुभ प्रभा विकीर्ण करते, अष्ट महासिद्धियों की कामिनियों द्वारा आह्वान किए गए, पार्वती की मुक्त वाम-दृष्टि से सुशोभित कण्ठभूषण वाले, अनन्त सर्प की वक्र कुंडलियों से आलिंगित शिव की जय हो!

Radiating the fierce auspicious light of the submarine fire, spoken of and invoked by the personified eight great supernatural powers, with the serpent ornament hanging from the neck freed by Parvati's sidelong glance — victorious is He whose infinite serpent coils in beautiful curves around Him!

imaṃ hi nityamevam uktamuttamottamaṃ stavaṃ paṭhansmaran bruvannaro viśuddhimetisantatam | hare gurau subhaktimāśu yāti nānyathā gatiṃ vimohanaṃ hi dehināṃ suśaṅkarasya cintanam ||16||

जो व्यक्ति इस सर्वोत्तम स्तोत्र का नित्य पाठ, स्मरण और उच्चारण करता है, वह निरन्तर विशुद्धि प्राप्त करता है। उसे शीघ्र ही हर (शिव) और गुरु में सच्ची भक्ति मिलती है — अन्य कोई गति नहीं। शंकर का चिन्तन प्राणियों के लिए सचमुच मोहित करने वाला है।

The person who daily reads, remembers, and recites this highest of hymns continuously attains purification. One quickly gains true devotion to Lord Shiva and the Guru — there is no other path. The contemplation of the auspicious Shankara is truly enchanting for all embodied souls.

pūjāvasānasamaye daśavaktragītaṃ yaḥ śambhupūjanaparaṃ paṭhati pradoṣe | tasya sthirāṃ rathagajendratura ṅgayuktāṃ lakṣmīṃ sadaiva sumukhīṃ pradadāti śambhuḥ ||17||

जो व्यक्ति प्रदोष काल में पूजा के अन्त में दशानन रावण द्वारा रचित इस शम्भु-पूजन-परायण स्तोत्र का पाठ करता है, उसे शम्भु रथ, गजराज और अश्वों से युक्त स्थिर लक्ष्मी प्रदान करते हैं — सदा प्रसन्नमुख लक्ष्मी उसके पास रहती हैं।

Whoever recites this hymn composed by the ten-faced Ravana, devoted to the worship of Shambhu, at the twilight hour at the conclusion of worship — to that person Lord Shambhu bestows permanent prosperity endowed with chariots, mighty elephants, and horses, and an ever-favorable Goddess Lakshmi.
