Totaka Ashtakam

viditākhilaśāstrasudājaladhē mahitōpaniṣatkathitārthanidhe | hṛdayē kalayē vimalaṃ caraṇaṃ bhava śaṅkara dēśika mē śaraṇam ॥ 1॥

हे शंकर, आप सम्पूर्ण शास्त्रों के अमृत-सागर हैं और उपनिषदों के उदात्त अर्थ के भण्डार हैं। मैं आपके निर्मल चरणों को अपने हृदय में धारण करता हूँ — हे देशिक शंकर, आप मेरे शरण हों। तोटकाचार्य अपने गुरु के समक्ष पूर्ण समर्पण के साथ नतमस्तक होते हैं।

O Shankara, you are the ocean of the nectar of all the scriptures, and the treasury of the supreme meaning declared by the exalted Upanishads. I meditate upon your pure lotus feet in my heart — be my refuge, O Guru Shankara. The disciple Totaka surrenders completely at the feet of the master who has drunk deep from every well of sacred knowledge.

karuṇāvaruṇālaya pālaya māṃ bhavasāgaraduḥkhavidūnahṛdam | racayākhiladarśanatattvaviddaṃ bhava śaṅkara dēśika mē śaraṇam ॥ 2॥

हे शंकर, आप करुणा के सागर हैं — मेरी रक्षा कीजिए, क्योंकि मेरा हृदय संसार-सागर के दुःखों से पीड़ित है। मुझे समस्त दर्शनशास्त्रों के तत्त्व का ज्ञाता बनाइए; हे देशिक शंकर, आप मेरे शरण हों। शिष्य अपने दुःखों से व्याकुल होकर गुरु की करुणा पर पूरा भरोसा करता है।

O Shankara, you are an ocean of compassion — protect me whose heart is tormented by the sorrows of the ocean of worldly existence. Fashion me into one who knows the truths of all philosophical systems; be my refuge, O Guru Shankara. The disciple cries out from the depths of suffering, trusting that the guru's boundless compassion will both shelter and transform him.

bhavatā janatā suhitā bhavitā nijabōdhavicāraṇa cārumate | kalayēśvarajīvavivēkavidaṃ bhava śaṅkara dēśika mē śaraṇam ॥ 3॥

हे सुंदर बुद्धि वाले शंकर, आपके आत्मज्ञान के विचार और शिक्षण से समस्त मानवता कृतार्थ हुई है। मैं आपको ईश्वर और जीव के विवेक के ज्ञाता के रूप में हृदय में धारण करता हूँ; हे देशिक शंकर, आप मेरे शरण हों। गुरु का सबसे बड़ा उपहार बाहरी कर्मकाण्ड नहीं, बल्कि भीतर का वह आलोक है जो स्वयं-विचार से प्राप्त होता है।

O beautiful-minded Shankara, humanity is truly blessed and benefited by you through your inquiry into and teaching of self-knowledge. I meditate upon you as the one who knows the discernment between the Lord and the individual soul; be my refuge, O Guru Shankara. The guru's gift to the world is not mere ritual or doctrine but the inner illumination that comes through deep, authentic self-inquiry.

bhava ēva bhavānīti mē nitarāṃ samacittā ēvāhamiti sphuṭabhāḥ | atidīnamimam paripālaya māṃ bhava śaṅkara dēśika mē śaraṇam ॥ 4॥

आप ही भवानी हैं — मेरी निरंतर समचित्तता, 'मैं हूँ' इस बोध के स्पष्ट प्रकाश से चमकती हुई। इस अत्यंत दीन जीव की पूरी तरह रक्षा कीजिए; हे देशिक शंकर, आप मेरे शरण हों। शिष्य गुरु को स्थिर और प्रकाशमान चेतना का साक्षात् स्वरूप मानकर पूर्ण विनम्रता से शरणागत होता है।

You are indeed Bhavani — my constant equanimous awareness, shining with the clear light of the truth 'I am.' Protect this most helpless one completely; be my refuge, O Guru Shankara. The disciple recognizes the guru as the very embodiment of steady, luminous consciousness, and appeals with utter humility for protection and grace.

jagatīmavituṃ kalitākṛtayō vicaranti mahāmahasaśchalataḥ | aharabhavadanusaṃsmaraṇāt bhava śaṅkara dēśika mē śaraṇam ॥ 5॥

महान प्रकाशमान विभूतियाँ विभिन्न रूपों का आश्रय लेकर इस संसार की रक्षा के लिए विचरण करती हैं। आपके नित्य अनुस्मरण से, हे शंकर, मुझे कृपा प्रदान करें; हे देशिक शंकर, आप मेरे शरण हों। यह श्लोक मानता है कि दिव्य ज्ञान गुरुओं और ऋषियों के रूप में संसार में गतिमान है।

Great luminous beings, assuming various forms as a pretext, roam the world for its protection and welfare. By the daily and continuous remembrance of you, O Shankara, may I be blessed; be my refuge, O Guru Shankara. The verse acknowledges that divine wisdom moves through the world in the guise of teachers and sages, and that disciplined daily remembrance of the guru is the key to accessing that grace.

svapadaṃ śritacētasamarpayatāṃ suvimuktisukāya kathaṃ na bhavēt | iti cēnnahi nāśaya mōhamayāṃ bhava śaṅkara dēśika mē śaraṇam ॥ 6॥

जो लोग अपना मन और हृदय आपके चरणों में समर्पित कर देते हैं, उन्हें मुक्ति का परम आनंद कैसे न मिले? यदि फिर भी कोई संदेह रहे, तो मेरी इस मोहमयी अंधकार को नष्ट कर दीजिए; हे देशिक शंकर, आप मेरे शरण हों। यह श्लोक विश्वास के साथ कहता है कि सच्चा समर्पण ही मुक्ति का सीधा मार्ग है।

How can those who surrender their mind and heart to your lotus feet not attain the supreme joy of complete liberation? If somehow doubt remains, then destroy utterly this delusion-filled darkness within me; be my refuge, O Guru Shankara. The verse asserts with quiet confidence that sincere surrender to the guru's wisdom is itself the direct path to freedom, while humbly acknowledging the stubborn grip of delusion.

anagādbhutacittakalāpaharē manasā vacasā kimu cittagatam | yadi dūrataraṃ na ca kiñcididaṃ bhava śaṅkara dēśika mē śaraṇam ॥ 7॥

हे निर्मल और अद्भुत, मनोविकारों के समूह को दूर करने वाले, मन और वाणी से क्या नहीं प्राप्त होता जब वे आपकी ओर मुड़ते हैं? यदि आपके माध्यम से कुछ भी दूर और अप्राप्य नहीं है, तो हे देशिक शंकर, आप मेरे शरण हों। शिष्य अचंभित है कि गुरु की कृपा सभी आंतरिक बाधाओं को दूर कर देती है।

O sinless and wondrous remover of the clusters of mental afflictions, what is there that is not attained by the mind and speech when they are turned toward you? If nothing remains truly distant or unattainable through you, then be my refuge, O Guru Shankara. The disciple marvels that the guru's grace dissolves all inner obstacles and makes the seemingly impossible — complete liberation — near and accessible.

gurupuṅgava puṅgavakētana tē samatāmayatāṃ nahi kō'pi sudhīḥ | śaraṇāgatavatsala tattvanidhe bhava śaṅkara dēśika mē śaraṇam ॥ 8॥

हे गुरुओं में श्रेष्ठ, हे शिव के नंदी-ध्वज धारी — आपकी समचित्तता की अवस्था को कोई भी बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति पूरी तरह नहीं पा सकता। हे तत्त्व के भण्डार, शरणागतों पर वात्सल्य बरसाने वाले — हे देशिक शंकर, आप मेरे शरण हों। तोटकाचार्य इस अंतिम श्लोक में गुरु की अतुलनीय महिमा और शरणागतों के प्रति उनके प्रेम की उद्घोषणा करते हैं।

O supreme among gurus, O one whose banner bears the bull of Shiva — truly no person of pure intellect can ever fully equal your state of supreme equanimity. O treasury of truth, tender and affectionate toward all who seek refuge — be my refuge, O Guru Shankara. Totakacharya closes his hymn with a final, soaring declaration of the guru's incomparable greatness and his tender love for those who surrender, expressing the disciple's complete and joyful dependence on Shankara's grace.
