Bhishma Wins the Daughters of Kashi
When Vichitravirya comes of age, Bhishma goes alone to the svayamvara of the three daughters of the king of Kashi. Mocked by the assembled kings as an old celibate, he names the eight forms of marriage, carries the maidens off by force, routs the pursuing kings and spares the defeated Shalva, then gives Ambika and Ambalika to Vichitravirya. The eldest, Amba, who had chosen Shalva, is released, but Shalva and Bhishma turn her away in turn for six years; she performs fierce austerities on the Himalaya, and Kumara gives her a garland whose wearer will cause Bhishma's death.
