Satyavati Reveals the Birth of Vyasa

Bhishma proposes that a worthy brahmin be invited to beget sons on the widows of Vichitravirya. Satyavati first urges Bhishma himself to do it, but he holds to his vow. She then confides how the sage Parashara fathered Vyasa on her while she was a maiden ferrying him across the Yamuna, and offers to call Vyasa to mind. Bhishma approves; Vyasa appears, agrees to his mother's request and, when she insists that the queens conceive at once, warns that they must bear his ugliness, after which Satyavati prepares Kausalya (Ambika).
