Mandavya Curses Dharma
Mandavya tells the sages that he blames no one. Learning who he is, the king begs his pardon and has him taken down; the stake cannot be drawn out and is cut off, and the sage, carrying its point within him, becomes known as Animandavya. He goes to Dharma's court and demands to know his sin; told that as a child he pierced insects with a blade of grass, he rules that no deed done before the fourteenth year shall count as sin and curses Dharma to be born of a shudra woman. So Dharma was born as Vidura, wise in dharma and worldly affairs and devoted to the welfare of the Kurus.

Then that tiger among sages said to those ascetics: "Whom shall I blame? No one else has wronged me."
Verse 2 (1.117.2)

The king said: "Whatever wrong I have done you through delusion and ignorance, best of seers, for that I beg your grace. You should not be angry with me."
Note on the text: Speaker corrected: Wikisource heads this verse प्रजोवाच ("the subjects said"), a misprint for राजोवाच; the speaker is the king, as the singular मया and the preceding verse show.

So the sage went about with the stake still inside him. With the spike lodged between his throat and his side, the sage went on with his practice, and he fell to thinking that it could serve him to carry his flower-basket.
