The Kuru Realm Flourishes; Pandu Becomes King

With the birth of Dhritarashtra, Pandu and Vidura, the Kuru lands prosper: rain comes in season, the cities fill with merchants and craftsmen, there are no robbers, and Bhishma guards the realm and keeps the wheel of dharma turning. Raised by Bhishma as his own sons, the three princes master the Vedas, arms and statecraft; Pandu is made commander of the army and the young Vidura the king's counsellor, and since Dhritarashtra is blind and Vidura born of a shudra mother, Pandu becomes king. Bhishma hears of marriageable princesses of the Kuntibhoja, Gandhara and Madra houses and turns to Vidura.
