The Birth of Karna
Vaishampayana tells how Shura of the Yadus gave his first-born daughter Pritha to his childless cousin Kuntibhoja, and how she served the fierce sage Durvasas so well that he gave her a mantra to summon any god. Out of curiosity the maiden called the Sun, who overcame her fears, united with her and restored her maidenhood; she bore Karna, born with armour and earrings, set him adrift in a casket, and he was raised by Radha's husband, a suta, as Vasushena. The chapter closes with the Sun's warning to Karna in a dream, Indra's request in the guise of a brahmin, Karna cutting the armour and earrings from his body, and the spear Indra gives him in return, from which he gets the names Karna and Vaikartana.
