Shvetaketu's Law and Kunti's Mantra

Pandu answers Kunti that in ancient times women were free and unbound, as animals and the Northern Kurus still are, and tells how the seer's son Shvetaketu, angered when an old brahmin led his mother away, laid down the rule binding wives and husbands. Citing Madayanti and his own birth from Vyasa, Pandu begs Kunti with folded hands to bear sons by a brahmin of great austerity. Kunti then reveals the mantra Durvasas gave her in girlhood, by which any god she summons must grant her a son, and asks his leave to use it.
