The Birth of Duhshala

Janamejaya asks how Gandhari came to have a daughter when Vyasa had promised her a hundred sons. Vaishampayana explains that while Vyasa was dividing the lump of flesh, Gandhari silently longed for a daughter as well, so that she might enjoy the love of a son-in-law and her husband might gain the worlds won through a daughter's son. When the hundred portions had been counted, one piece was left over; Vyasa declared it would be the daughter she wished for and placed it in a separate jar of ghee, and in time Duhshala was born, the youngest of all.

You have told me from the beginning about Dhritarashtra's sons, the hundred born by the seer's grace, but no daughter was mentioned.

Now there is Yuyutsu, son of the vaishya woman, and one daughter beyond the hundred. Yet the daughter of the king of Gandhara, sinless one, was declared to be the mother of a hundred sons
