The Lac House in Brief; Duryodhana Presses Dhritarashtra

Vaishampayana first tells the affair of the house of lac in brief: Duryodhana and his companions resolve to burn Kunti and her sons, Vidura sees through the plot and sends the Pandavas away by boat, and a Nishada woman with her five sons and Purochana die in the fire while the Kurus, believing the Pandavas dead, perform their funeral rites. At Janamejaya's request he then begins the story in detail. Duryodhana urges Dhritarashtra to send the Pandavas to Varanavata; the king hesitates, recalling Pandu's goodness and fearing the people, Bhishma, Drona, Vidura and Kripa, but Duryodhana argues that the elders will not stand against him and begs his father to end his anguish.
