The Burning of the House of Lac

After a full year in Varanavata, Purochana rejoices to see the Pandavas apparently trusting him, and Yudhishthira, reading his mind, judges that the time to flee has come. Kunti holds a night feast for brahmins, and a Nishada woman, Purochana's spy, comes with her five sons, drinks herself senseless and falls asleep in the house. In the dead of night, with a gale blowing, Bhima sets fire to Purochana's quarters and then to the whole house, and the Pandavas escape with their mother through the tunnel. The townspeople wake to the blaze and curse Duryodhana and Dhritarashtra, while Bhima, carrying his mother and brothers, bears them away through the forest at the speed of the wind.
