Hidimba Falls in Love with Bhima

While the Pandavas and Kunti sleep in the forest with Bhima keeping watch, the man-eating rakshasa Hidimba smells human flesh and sends his sister Hidimba to kill them. At the sight of Bhima she falls in love, takes on a beautiful human form, warns him of her brother and begs him to become her husband, offering to carry him off through the sky. Bhima refuses to abandon his sleeping mother and brothers, or to marry before his elder brother, and tells her to go or to send her brother if she likes.

tatra teṣu śayāneṣu hiḍimbo nāma rākṣasaḥ | avidūre vanāttasmācchālavṛkṣaṃ samāśritaḥ

While they lay there asleep, a rakshasa named Hidimba had taken shelter in a sal tree not far from that forest.

He was cruel, an eater of human flesh, of great might and valour; dark as a monsoon rain-cloud, tawny-eyed and dreadful in form.

Note on the text: The first line = CE 1.139.2ab (which reads mahāvīryo mahābalaḥ); the second line is not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension; CE apparatus 1.139.2*1516, line 1). Aligned by hand.

His mouth was fearsome with fangs; he was frightful and terrible to behold, with sagging buttocks, a sagging belly, and red beard and hair.

Note on the text: Corrected दष्ट्राकरालवदनः → दंष्ट्राकरालवदनः (misprint in Wikisource; a dropped anusvara in दंष्ट्रा, "fang" — the critical edition's apparatus reads daṃṣṭrākarāla). Not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension; CE apparatus 1.139.2*1516, lines 2–3).

ko hi suptānimānbhrātṝndattvā rākṣasabhojanam | mātaraṃ ca naro gacchetkāmārta iva madvidhaḥ

What man like me would leave these sleeping brothers and his mother as food for a rakshasa, and go off like one sick with lust?"

Hidimba (the rakshasi) said

Verse 45 (1.164.45)

ekaṃ tvāṃ mokṣayiṣyāmi saha mātrā parantapa | sodarānutsṛjaināṃstvamāroha jaghanaṃ mama

"I will save you alone, together with your mother, tamer of foes. Leave these brothers of yours and climb onto my hips."

Note on the text: Removed the wiki mark (backtick) at the start of the verse. Not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension; CE apparatus 1.139.28*1525, lines 1–2).

nāhaṃ jīvitumāśaṃse bhrātṝnutsṛjya rākṣasi | yathāśraddhaṃ vrajaikā hi vipriyaṃ me prabhāṣase

"I have no wish to live if I abandon my brothers, rakshasi. Go alone, as you please; what you say is hateful to me."

Verse 47 (1.164.47)

yatte priyaṃ tatkariṣye sarvānetānprabodhaya | mokṣayiṣyāmyahaṃ kāmaṃ rākṣasātpuruṣādakāt

"I will do whatever pleases you. Wake them all; I will gladly save you all from the man-eating rakshasa."

Note on the text: Removed the speaker heading "राक्षस्युवाच" (with a stray quote mark), which had slipped into the verse text; the verse is spoken by the rakshasi.

Verse 48 (1.164.48)

sukhasuptānvane bhrātṝnmātaraṃ caiva rākṣasi | na bhayādbodhayiṣyāmi bhrātustava durātmanaḥ

"I will not wake my brothers and my mother, sleeping peacefully in the forest, rakshasi, out of fear of your wicked brother.

Verse 49 (1.164.49)

na hi me rākṣasā bhīru soḍhuṃ śaktāḥ parākramam | na manuṣyā na gandharvā na yakṣāścārulocane

For rakshasas cannot withstand my might, timid one, nor can men, nor gandharvas, nor yakshas, lovely-eyed one.

Verse 50 (1.164.50)

gaccha vā tiṣṭha vā bhadre yadvāpīcchasi tatkuru | taṃ vā preṣaya tanvaṅgi bhrātaraṃ puruṣādakam

Go or stay, good lady, or do whatever else you wish; or send that man-eating brother of yours, slender one."

Note on the text: Corrected यद्वा पीच्छसि → यद्वापीच्छसि (misprint in Wikisource; a misplaced word break; वा + अपि + इच्छसि, "or whatever else you wish" — the critical edition reads yad vāpīcchasi).
