Drupada's Sacrifice: Dhrishtadyumna and Krishna Are Born

Burning to avenge himself on Drona, Drupada searches the settlements of brahmins and finds the sage brothers Yaja and Upayaja. Upayaja refuses him, but after a year of service sends him to his elder brother Yaja, whose scruples are looser; Yaja agrees to perform the sacrifice for a son who will kill Drona. From the fire rises the armoured prince Dhrishtadyumna, hailed by an unseen voice as Drona's slayer, and from the altar the dark, radiant Krishna, foretold to bring ruin on the kshatriyas. The children are named, and Drona, knowing that fate cannot be escaped, takes Dhrishtadyumna as his pupil in arms.
