Drona and Drupada: The Broken Friendship
The visiting brahmin begins his tale. Drona is born to the sage Bharadvaja at Gangadvara and grows up studying and playing beside Drupada, son of King Prishata. Drona obtains all his weapons from Rama Jamadagnya, but when he comes to Drupada, now king, as a friend, Drupada scorns him. Drona becomes teacher of the Kuru princes and, as his fee, has them seize Drupada; after the Dhartarashtras are beaten back, Arjuna and his brothers bring Drupada bound before him. Drona takes half the kingdom and offers friendship as an equal, but the humiliation never leaves the Panchala king's heart.
