Arjuna Carries Off Subhadra; Balarama's Wrath
As Arjuna drives out of Dvaraka with Subhadra at the reins, Viprithu, left to guard the city in Krishna's absence, comes against him with an army; Arjuna disables the Yadava warriors without killing any, and Viprithu, who knows of Krishna's plan, embraces him and sends him on his way in Krishna's chariot. The soldiers raise the alarm at the Sudharma hall, and the Vrishnis, Bhojas and Andhakas arm themselves in fury. Balarama calms them until Krishna has spoken, then denounces Arjuna's ingratitude and vows to rid the earth of the Kauravas.

Verse 52 (1.244.52)
tato'bravīdvāsudevaṃ vaco rāmaḥ parantapaḥ | trailokyanātha he kṛṣṇa bhūtabhavyabhaviṣyakṛt | kimavāgupaviṣṭo'si prekṣamāṇo janārdana
Then Rama, scorcher of foes, spoke to Vasudeva: "Lord of the three worlds, Krishna, maker of past, present and future, why do you sit there silent, looking on, Janardana?
Note on the text: Removed stray wiki marks (` and '). Lines 1 and 3 = 1.212.25 (line 1 reads differently there); line 2 is not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension).

Verse 53 (1.244.53)
satkṛtastvatkṛte pārthaḥ sarvairasmābhiracyuta | na ca so'rhati tāṃ pūjāṃ durbuddhiḥ kulapāṃsanaḥ
For your sake, Achyuta, all of us honoured Partha; yet that evil-minded disgrace to his family did not deserve such honour.
Note on the text: Balarama's speech (begun in verse 52) fills verses 53–58; Wikisource prints no speaker line and carries वैशंपायन over.
Verse 54 (1.244.54)
ko hi tatraiva bhuktvānnaṃ bhājanaṃ bhettumarhati | manyamānaḥ kule jātamātmānaṃ puruṣaḥ kvacit
What man who thinks himself well born would eat his food in a place and then break the very dish?
Note on the text: Corrected भुक्तावान्नं → भुक्त्वान्नं (misprint in Wikisource; inserted vowel sign, following the critical edition's bhuktvānnaṃ).
Verse 55 (1.244.55)
icchanneva hi saṃbandhaṃ kṛtaṃ pūrvaṃ ca mānayan | ko hi nāma bhavenārthī sāhasena samācaret
Who, if he truly wanted the alliance and respected the bond already made, would act with violence?
Verse 56 (1.244.56)
so'vamanya tathā'smākamanādṛtya ca keśavam | prasahya hṛtavānadya subhadrāṃ mṛtyumātmanaḥ
Slighting us in this way and disregarding Keshava, he has today carried off Subhadra by force, and with her his own death.
Verse 57 (1.244.57)
kathaṃ hi śiraso madhye kṛtaṃ tena padaṃ mama | marṣayiṣyāmi govinda pādasparśamivoragaḥ
He has set his foot on the very crown of my head; how am I to bear it, Govinda, any more than a snake bears the touch of a foot?
Verse 58 (1.244.58)
adya niṣkauravāmekaḥ kariṣyāmi vasundharām | na hi me marṣaṇīyo'yamarjunasya vyatikramaḥ
Today I alone will make the earth empty of Kauravas; this outrage of Arjuna's is not one I can endure."

Verse 59 (1.244.59)
taṃ tathā garjamānaṃ tu meghadundubhiniḥsvanam | anvapadyanta te sarve bhojavṛṣṇyandhakāstadā
As he roared thus, with a voice like thunderclouds and kettledrums, all the Bhojas, Vrishnis and Andhakas took his side.
