Indra Withdraws and Maya Is Spared
Krishna's discus and Arjuna's arrows cut down the creatures fleeing the burning Khandava forest, and the gods give up the fight. A bodiless voice tells Indra that his friend Takshaka is away at Kurukshetra and that Krishna and Arjuna are Nara and Narayana, beyond defeat, so Indra returns to heaven. Agni, gorged on the fat of the slain, burns the forest for fifteen days; when the asura Maya flees and Krishna raises his discus against him, Arjuna grants him safety. Only six escape the fire: Ashvasena, Maya and the four Sharngaka birds.
