Mandapala's Anxiety and the Reproaches of His Wives

Though Agni has promised to spare his sons, Mandapala frets over them aloud, and his young wife Lapita jealously accuses him of pining for Jarita and tells him to go to her; he answers that he wanders only for the sake of his offspring. When the fire has passed, Jarita finds her sons alive and unharmed. Mandapala arrives, but at first neither the sons nor Jarita will answer him, and Jarita sends him back to Lapita. He replies with a warning about the poison of co-wife rivalry, citing how Arundhati suspected Vasishtha and was dimmed for it, and his sons then attend on him as he sets about reassuring them.
