Adi Parva · Adhyaya 260

Indra's Boons and the End of the Khandava Fire

Mandapala tells his sons that he stayed away because he trusted Agni's promise, their mother's virtue and their own strength, and then leaves with his wife for another land. Sated with the fat of the Khandava creatures, Agni shows himself to Arjuna; Indra descends with the Maruts and promises Arjuna all his weapons once Mahadeva is pleased with him, and grants Krishna lasting friendship with Arjuna. After twenty-one days of burning, Agni thanks the two heroes, confirms Arjuna's gifts of Gandiva, the quivers and the monkey-bannered chariot, and gives them leave; Krishna, Arjuna and the Danava Maya walk around him and sit down together by a river. The Adi Parva ends here.

yuṣmākamapavargārthaṃ vijñapto jvalano mayā | agninā ca tathetyevaṃ pratijñātaṃ mahātmanā

For your deliverance I made my plea to the Fire-god, and the great-souled Agni promised that it would be so.

Note on the text: Corrected ती → विज्ञप्तो (misprint in Wikisource; the word is mutilated and the pada short; critical edition vijñapto) and तथेत्येतिज्ञातं → तथेत्येवं प्रतिज्ञातं (misprint; वं प्र lost). Recension variant of critical edition 1.225.1.

Verse 3 (1.260.3)

न सन्तापो हि वः कार्यः पुत्रका हृदि मां प्रति । ऋषीन्वेद हुताशोऽपि ब्रह्म तद्विदितं च वः ॥

na santāpo hi vaḥ kāryaḥ putrakā hṛdi māṃ prati | ṛṣīnveda hutāśo'pi brahma tadviditaṃ ca vaḥ

So you must not nurse resentment against me in your hearts, my sons. Even the eater of oblations knows you to be seers, and the Veda is known to you.

vasāmedovahāḥ kulyāstatra pītvā ca pāvakaḥ | jagāma paramāṃ tṛptiṃ darśayāmāsa cārjunam

There the Fire-god drank the streams running with fat and marrow, reached the height of satisfaction, and showed himself to Arjuna.

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition (1.225.6): Wikisource has lost परमां तृप्तिं from the second line, leaving it four syllables short.

Verse 7 (1.260.7)

ततोऽन्तरिक्षाद्भगवानवतीर्य पुरन्दरः । मरुद्गणैर्वृतः पार्थं केशवं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥
