Garuda's Pact with Indra and the Freeing of Vinata

Garuda accepts Indra's friendship and, when asked, describes his own strength. He agrees to set the amrita down where Indra can take it back, and asks that the serpents become his food. He brings the amrita to his mother, lays it on kusha grass, tells the serpents to bathe before they drink, and declares Vinata free. While they bathe Indra carries it off; the serpents lick the grass where it lay, their tongues are split in two, and the kusha grass becomes sacred. The adhyaya closes with the merit of hearing this story.

Good people, it is true, do not approve of praising one's own strength; whoever does it without cause, best of the gods, is at once held to blame.

Note on the text: Removed a stray wiki backtick before the second line. The first line = CE 1.30.2ab; the second is not in the critical edition (vulgate).
