The Serpents Who Perished in the Fire
Shaunaka asks for the names of the serpents who fell into the fire. Sauti answers that they were beyond counting, but names the chief ones family by family: those born in the lines of Vasuki, Takshaka, Airavata, Kauravya and Dhritarashtra. He ends by describing the countless others, with two, five, seven, ten or a hundred heads, huge as mountains and full of venom, all burned in the great sacrifice.
