The Serpent Sacrifice Ends

Dropped by Indra, Takshaka hangs in mid-air when Astika cries out "Stay!" three times, and Janamejaya, urged by his assembly, grants Astika's boon and ends the sacrifice. The king rewards the priests and the sūta Lohitaksha, who had foretold that a brahmin would stop the rite, and sends Astika home with honour. The grateful serpents offer Astika a boon, and he asks that whoever recites his story be safe from serpents; the charms against snakebite follow. Sauti closes the tale of Astika, which he has told as Pramati once told it to Ruru.

Why, O sūta, did the store of mantras not come to the minds of those wise brahmins at the fire then, so that Takshaka did not fall?
