Yayati's Austerities and Ascent to Heaven

Having crowned Puru, Yayati lives as a forest hermit and goes to heaven, but is soon cast down by Indra. Janamejaya asks how he fell, and how he regained heaven in the company of Vasumat, Ashtaka, Pratardana and Shibi. Vaishampayana begins the later story of Yayati, describing the thousand years of ever harsher austerities, on gleaned grain, water, air and amid five fires, by which he rose to heaven.
