Gifts of Sandals, Sesame, Land, Cows and Food

Yudhishthira asks Bhishma about the reward of giving sandals, and then of giving sesame, land, cows and food. Bhishma praises sesame as the first food of the ancestors, tells how the gods asked Brahma for ground on which to sacrifice and gave land as the sixth part of their rite, and lists the merits of giving land, cows (with the story of Rantideva and the river Charmanvati) and food.

Note on the text: Lines 1-2 = CE 13.65.49a, 49c; line 3 (printed by Wikisource in backticks, as an addition) = CE star passage 13.65.49d*0353_01 (gorasānāṃ na vikretur apañcayajanasya ca). Removed the stray backtick, the closing quote and the doubled danda. The reading "विक्रेतू रसं च यजनस्य च" is corrupt (CE: vikretur apañcayajanasya ca); kept as printed, as no certain emendation exists. Wikisource lacks nothing else here.

O protector of the earth, he who gives food to one who is weary and hungry goes to the great abode of the Self-born, O lord of men.

Note on the text: Corrected महात्स्थानं → महत्स्थानं (misprint in Wikisource; "mahāt-sthānam" is not valid sandhi; the adjective with sthāna is mahat, "great abode"). Variant of CE 13.65.55 (CE: svāyaṃbhuvaṃ mahābhāgaṃ sa paśyati narādhipa; the page records this as a variant).
