How Agni Made the Tawny Cows the Best
Shuka asks why tawny cows are the foremost among cows of every colour. Vyasa tells how Agni, fleeing the gods, hid among the cows; when the gods found him there and begged him to favour the cows, he made those in whose bodies he had lodged tawny, supreme and of great merit. A tawny cow should therefore be given to a learned, tranquil brahmin who keeps the sacred fire, and she purifies giver and receiver for as many ages as she has hairs.
