The Marks of the Tawny Cow

Shuka asks how a tawny cow is to be recognised. Vyasa names six places where the tawny colour may show (eyes, horns, hooves, testicles, ears, nose), the deity each belongs to, and the six-fold origin of the tawny cow. He then lists the fates of those who yoke, milk or live by a cow tawny in each of these parts: hell, animal births, blindness, poverty, disease and low birth.

Listen, dear son, to how a tawny cow is to be known among cows. By the eyes, the horns, the hooves, the testicles, the ears and the nose: tawny cows are said to be of six kinds.
