Indra Tests the Sages with the Stolen Lotus Stalks

Bhishma tells how the seven sages, Atri, Vasishtha, Kashyapa, Gautama, Vishvamitra, Jamadagni and Bharadvaja, wandering hungry in the forest with Arundhati, Ganda and Pashusakha, are joined by a plump mendicant, Shunahsakha. At a lotus pond guarded by a demoness, each sage gives a punning name and is turned away; Shunahsakha kills her with his staff. After the lotus stalks vanish, each of them swears an oath that the thief be cursed. Shunahsakha reveals himself as Indra, who hid the stalks to test them, and the sages go to heaven for their freedom from greed.
