Service of the Shudras and the Rules of Purification

Yudhishthira asks in how many ways the Shudras are to serve and what worlds that service wins. Bhishma recalls the teaching of the aged Parashara: a Shudra who practises austerity by the Vedic rite or by a wrong path suffers for it and is reborn among barbarian peoples, whose names are listed; each class has its own livelihood and duty, and abandoning them leads to hell and animal births. Parashara then begins the rules of purification that a Shudra serving mendicants must keep: the use of earth and water after relieving oneself, the cleansing of the hands, feet and clothes, and the sipping of water with the deities it pleases.

śūdrāṇāmiha śuśrūṣā nityamevānuvarṇitā | kaiḥ kāraṇaiḥ katividhā śuśrūṣā samudāhṛtā

You have said that service is always enjoined here upon the Shudras. For what reasons, and in how many kinds, is that service declared?

The page prints the heading "युधिष्ठिर उवाच" (13-146-1x, with a stray asterisk) in this row; it is made the speaker and removed from the text. The CE heads the passage "yudhiṣṭhiraḥ" (@010_0000).

And what worlds, O best of the Bharatas, are appointed for them through service? Tell me, O best of the Bharatas, what marks the dharma of the Shudras.

विधिरेष समुद्दिष्टः शौचे चाभ्युक्षणं स्मृतम् । शूद्रस्यैव विधिर्दृष्टो गृहान्निष्क्रमतस्ततः ॥

vidhireṣa samuddiṣṭaḥ śauce cābhyukṣaṇaṃ smṛtam | śūdrasyaiva vidhirdṛṣṭo gṛhānniṣkramatastataḥ

This rule has been declared; sprinkling is remembered as part of purification. This rule for a Shudra is seen when he goes out from the house.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 130-131 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 10, printed after 13,098.022 as 13,098.022d@010_0130-0131); otherwise vulgate-only. Line 2: Wikisource "शूद्रस्यैव … निष्क्रमतस्ततः" is a variant of CE "śūdrasyaiṣa … niṣkramataḥ sataḥ"; kept.

Verse 64 (13.146.64)

नित्यं त्वलुप्तशौचेन वर्तितव्यं कृतात्मना । यशस्कामेन भिक्षुभ्यः शूद्रेणात्महितार्थिना ॥

nityaṃ tvaluptaśaucena vartitavyaṃ kṛtātmanā | yaśaskāmena bhikṣubhyaḥ śūdreṇātmahitārthinā

One of trained self should always keep his purity unbroken: a Shudra who desires fame and seeks his own good should so conduct himself toward the mendicants.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 132-133 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 10, printed after 13,098.022 as 13,098.022d@010_0132-0133); otherwise vulgate-only. The stray closing quote mark (…आत्महितार्थिना') is removed. The page then prints only apparatus notes after the colophon (variant readings and the remark that the first eight adhyayas of this section are found only in southern manuscripts); not added. Corrected शुद्रेण → शूद्रेण (misprint in Wikisource; short u for long ū).
