Anushasana Parva · Adhyaya 149

Conduct and Expiation for the Servant of Mendicants

Parashara continues his instruction to the Shudra who serves mendicants: he must not offend or answer back, must take nothing unasked, and must look on all beings with an equal eye. He is warned against harming living creatures, and the expiations for various offences are given: a year in the open for a charge involving a woman of the three classes, with longer terms for higher birth; fasting and breath-control for taking a boneless creature's life, doubled for creatures with bones; and graded penalties for deed, word and thought. Parashara closes by saying that one who serves the best of men with a composed mind, neither welcoming death nor life, soon reaches a settlement of his merit and sin.

Verse 1 (13.149.1)

एवं प्रयतितव्यं हि शुश्रूषार्थमतन्द्रितैः । सर्वाभिरुपसेवाभिस्तुष्यन्ति यतयो यथा ॥

evaṃ prayatitavyaṃ hi śuśrūṣārthamatandritaiḥ | sarvābhirupasevābhistuṣyanti yatayo yathā

Thus the tireless should strive in service, by every kind of attendance, so that the ascetics are pleased.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 227-228 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 10, printed after 13,098.022 as 13,098.022d@010_0227-0228); otherwise vulgate-only. The page prints the heading "`पराशर उवाच" (13-149-1x, with a stray backtick) in this row; it is made the speaker and removed from the text. The CE has no speaker label at this point (its label "parāśaraḥ" at @010_0226 stands inside the previous verse), but Wikisource heads the speech. Corrected सर्वाभिरूपसेवाभिस् → सर्वाभिरुपसेवाभिस् (misprint in Wikisource; long ū for short u (उपसेवा); CE sarvābhir upasevābhiḥ).

śreya evābhidhātavyaṃ kartavyaṃ ca prahṛṣṭavat | tūṣṇīṃbhāvena vai tatra na kruddhamabhisaṃvadet

He should speak only what is for the good and act cheerfully. By keeping silent there, he should not argue with one who is angry.

nādadīta parasvāni na gṛhṇīyādayācitam | labdhālabdhena jīveta tathaiva paritoṣayet

hiṃsāṃ vā yadi vā'hiṃsāṃ na kuryādātmakāraṇāt | yatretaro bhavennityaṃ doṣaṃ tatra na kārayet
