Indra Tells Matali Whom He Honours

Yudhishthira asks before whom even the gods bow. Bhishma answers with an old account: after slaying Vritra, Indra rides in glory with the sages praising him, and his charioteer Matali asks whom Indra himself honours. Indra names them: those who pursue dharma, wealth and desire without turning to unrighteousness, the beautiful who renounce pleasure, the content and soft-spoken, the pure householders who keep the sacred fire, devoted wives, Brahmins and cows, and the self-controlled renouncers steady as mountains.
