The Householder's Duties: The Earth Instructs Krishna
Yudhishthira asks Bhishma for the whole dharma of the householder and how a man prospers by it. Bhishma recalls the Earth's old conversation with Vasudeva: the householder honours the gods, ancestors, sages, guests and all beings each day through sacrifice, the shraddha offering, the Vaishvadeva and the bali offerings set out in each direction, feeds guests and elders before himself, and honours his teacher, priest and father-in-law. One who keeps these duties without envy gains prosperity here and honour in the next world.
