Anushasana Parva · Adhyaya 214

Fate and the Sacrifice of Battle

Maheshvara shows with examples, from moths and deer to fish and ploughmen's victims, that fate cannot be avoided, and explains how Rantideva's cows came of their own accord to be slain and gave rise to the Charmanvati. He then turns to the warrior's duty: a soldier must fight for the lord who has honoured him, battle is likened to a sacrifice, the slain and the slayer both win honour, and the king must guard every dharma. He ends by saying that giving up one's life surpasses even the gift of the whole earth.

Verse 1 (13.214.1)

श्रूयतां कारणं देवि यथा हि दुरतिक्रमः । विधिः सर्वेषु भूतेषु मर्तव्ये समुपस्थिते ॥

śrūyatāṃ kāraṇaṃ devi yathā hi duratikramaḥ | vidhiḥ sarveṣu bhūteṣu martavye samupasthite

Listen to the reason, O goddess, why fate is so hard to overcome in all beings when the time to die has come.

Note on the text: Rebuilt from the raw page (closing label 13-214-1 removed). Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 1128-1129 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 15, printed after 13.134.57 as 13,134.057d@015_1128-1129). Whole adhyaya (13-214-1 to 64) is vulgate-only text: in the CE it is part of App. I No. 15 (13,134.057d@015_1128-1270), inserted after 13.134.57, continuing the dialogue of adhyaya 213. The page is a poem-only page; the input parser left each verse's closing label (e.g. 13-214-1) inside the Sanskrit and gave wikisource_number null. All 64 verses were rebuilt from the raw page: the labels are removed, the verse number is taken from the label, and the half-verse breaks are kept. The two summary headings above the poem are not verse text and are dropped; nothing follows the colophon. Speaker is Maheshvara (heading 13-214-1x), as on the page. No stray copy of another adhyaya.

Verse 2 (13.214.2)

āyuḥkṣayeṇopahitāḥ samāgamya varānane | kīṭāḥ pataṅgā bahavaḥ sthūlāḥ sūkṣmāśca madhyamāḥ | prajvalatsu pradīpeṣu svayameva patanti te

Beings whose lives have run out come together, O fair-faced one: insects and moths, many of them, large, small and middling, fall of their own accord into blazing lamps.

sūnārthaṃ devi baddhānāṃ kṣīṇāyuryo nibadhyate | avaśo ghātakasyātha hastaṃ tadahareti saḥ

Of those bound for the slaughter, O goddess, the one whose life is spent is caught; helpless, he goes that very day into the slayer's hand.

śalyakasya ca jihvāgraṃ svayamāruhya śobhane | āyuḥkṣayeṇopahatā nibadhyante sarīsṛpāḥ
