Livelihood and the Duties of a Householder

Maheshvara closes his teaching on sacrifice by saying that animals offered at rites go to heaven and that the sacrificer and his family share the fruit. Uma then asks how householders should live. Maheshvara names the ways of livelihood (learning, trade and farming, service, craft and the stage), gives advice on each, teaches dividing one's wealth in four parts for dharma, wealth, pleasure and emergencies, and sets out the daily conduct of a good householder.
