Karma and Caste: Why Fortunes Differ
Uma asks Maheshvara whether the four castes arise from nature or from action. He answers that each person's birth and fortune follow his own deeds: a Brahmin who abandons his duties is reborn a Shudra, and a Shudra of good conduct is reborn a Brahmin. Asked why some men are rich and happy and others poor, he tells how Brahma, accused of partiality, replied that beings reap what they themselves have sown, and he explains the different fates of the generous, the grudging, those who give only under pressure, and the poor who still give.

O Lord, destroyer of Bhaga's eyes, slayer of Time, Shankara! Were these four castes ordained by their own natures, or do the castes come into being through action, O Maheshvara?
