The Fruit of Deeds, Here and Hereafter

Uma says that by Maheshvara's grace she has understood that every deed follows its doer and is never lost, and asks when a man enjoys the fruit of a good deed, here or after death. Maheshvara answers that people enjoy here the fruit of deeds done in an earlier body, while what is done here ripens in the world beyond; gods and demons, being immortal, enjoy their deeds' fruit in a single body, which is where they differ from men.

govatsavacca jananīṃ nimnaṃ salilavattathā | kartāraṃ svakṛtaṃ karma nityaṃ tadanudhāvati

As a calf runs after its mother, as water runs to low ground, so a man's own deed always runs after its doer.

You have rightly asked, goddess; this is the most secret matter among men. For your pleasure I shall tell this secret, O fair-faced one.

The deed done in a former body, people enjoy the fruit of here. What men do here bears fruit in the world beyond. This is the order seen among human beings alone.

devānāmasurāṇāṃ ca amaratvāttapobalāt | ekenaiva śarīreṇa bhujyate karmaṇāṃ phalam | mānuṣairna tathā devi antaraṃ tvetadiṣyate

For gods and demons, because of their immortality and the power of austerity, the fruit of deeds is enjoyed in one single body. It is not so with human beings, goddess; this is the difference that is admitted.
