Sins of Mind, Speech and Body; the Origin of Drink

Uma asks about good and evil action. Maheshvara explains that wrongdoing is threefold, of mind, speech and body, each kind listed, and that sin of the body weighs most. He then names the cases in which a man is not stained by killing or lying: defending his life, a village or his master, or surviving a famine. Asked about drink, he tells how, when all men were wise and no one served another, Brahma had the gods draw out the essence of darkness and spread it among men so that work and sacrifice might go on, and he lists the folly, shamelessness and ruin that drink brings, so that good people shun it.
