Signs of the Divine and the Demonic

Uma asks whether a person's destiny can be known while he is still alive. Maheshvara answers that living beings are of two kinds, the divine and the demonic. He lists the demonic by their conduct (the violent, thieves, cheats, adulterers, haters of the pure, and harmful animals and trees) and the divine by theirs (truthful, honest, generous, compassionate, grateful, self-controlled and devoted to elders, teachers, gods and brahmins), and says the next world is inferred from conduct in this one.
