Anushasana Parva · Adhyaya 240

The Heavens of the Righteous

Uma asks how the doers of good deeds enjoy themselves in heaven, and Maheshvara describes the heavenly regions around Meru: golden trees hung with garments and ornaments, lotus-pools, fragrant breezes, young men and women who delight in one another, and no hunger, thirst or anger. When their merit is spent they fall and are reborn among humans. He then names eight higher stations (Vidyadharas, Kimpurushas, Yakshas, Gandharvas, Kinnaras, Apsarases, Danavas and Devas) and says that all this is won by good deeds alone.
