Liberation as the Highest Dharma, and the Seeker's Discipline
Uma, bewildered by the many paths of dharma praised in the world, asks Maheshvara for the knowledge that settles doubt. Maheshvara replies that every dharma bears fruit, but that liberation from the cycle of rebirth is the highest goal, reached through the knowledge of the Self. He describes how a Brahmin or kshatriya, freed from debts, leaves the household for the forest, takes a teacher, and learns Sankhya or Yoga, and sets out the ascetic's rules: few possessions, service of the teacher, one meal, alms, purity, compassion, and freedom from ill will, ego, grief and fear, which lead to nirvana.
