Atri Lights the Darkness; Chyavana Wins Soma for the Ashvins
Vayu goes on to the silent king. When Svarbhanu's darkness blinded the Moon and the Sun and the gods were being beaten, the sage Atri became the moon and sun and drove off the darkness, so that the gods won. Vayu then tells how Chyavana, to win a share of Soma for the Ashvins, held Indra's mountain and thunderbolt motionless and created the monster Mada, in whose mouth the gods were caught until Indra bowed; Chyavana then divided Mada among dice, hunting, drink and women, from which men should keep away. Each tale ends with the challenge to name a Kshatriya greater than the brahmin.
